American Airlines to debut all-new Boeing 787-9 on Auckland–Dallas route

American Airlines is set to introduce a refined long-haul experience between New Zealand and the United States with the launch of its next-generation Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on the Auckland (AKL) to Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) route from January 2026.

Flying over New Zealand’s peak summer travel period, the state-of-the-art aircraft will enter service on 7 January and operate through to 28 March 2026. The new 787-9 features the airline’s new Flagship Suite®, 51 private business class suites with sliding doors, chaise lounge seating, wireless charging, USB-C and AC power, and enhanced personal storage. The suites offer a refined blend of privacy and functionality for the ultra-long-haul journey.

Premium Economy travellers will notice a major upgrade too. American has reimagined its 32-seat Premium Economy cabin with new seat architecture that includes privacy wings, calf and footrests for additional comfort, and wireless charging integrated into a sleek, modernised seat trim. It’s a notable enhancement for travellers seeking space and comfort without the business class price tag.

In the Main Cabin, every seat is equipped with the latest 4K QLED seatback screens and high-speed power access. Passengers can enjoy an expansive library of entertainment via Thales’ next-gen inflight system with everything from Hollywood hits and kids’ shows to audiobooks and curated playlists. With USB-C and AC power standard throughout the cabin, this aircraft signals a major step forward in economy class expectations.

“We’re thrilled to bring our latest premium widebody aircraft to New Zealand,” said José A. Freig, American Airlines’ Vice President of International and Inflight Dining Operations. “The AKL–DFW route is one of our most popular seasonal services, and the 787-9 will deliver the elevated, seamless experience that today’s travellers increasingly expect whether in Flagship Suite, Premium Economy or the Main Cabin.”

American Airlines first touched down in Auckland in 2022 and now serves the city with seasonal connections to both Los Angeles and Dallas. This latest fleet upgrade cements the airline’s long-term ambitions for growth in the Pacific market.
