AmaWaterways on Magdalena River in Colombia

AmaWaterways launches historic river cruise operations on Colombia’s Magdalena river

AmaWaterways has officially launched luxury river cruising in Colombia, marking a historic first for the industry with the debut of AmaMagdalena—the first-ever luxury river cruise ship to sail the storied Magdalena River. The milestone maiden voyage departed on 12 April 2025, opening a bold new chapter for the cruise line and setting a precedent for tourism development in the region.

This ground-breaking addition to AmaWaterways’ fleet extends the company’s global footprint beyond Europe, Asia, and Africa, introducing Colombia’s vibrant culture and natural wonders to a new generation of luxury travellers.

“Our entry into Colombia represents a significant evolution not just for AmaWaterways, but for river cruising globally,” said Rudi Schreiner, co-founder and CEO. “The Magdalena River has long been one of South America’s great undiscovered waterways, and we’re proud to be the first to offer this level of immersive luxury on its banks. From day one, we’ve worked hand-in-hand with local communities to create a product that is not only enriching for our guests but empowering for the region.”

Accommodating just 60 guests, AmaMagdalena is a custom-built vessel designed with Colombian artistry and craftsmanship at its core. Local talents including architect Camilo Restrepo and interior designer Mariana Schlegel Donado from Casa Schlegel Donado in Barranquilla, infused the ship with inspiration from Colombia’s landscapes and traditions. Cartagena-based Ocean Projects contributed artisanal woodwork, further anchoring the ship in its local roots. The ship’s suites—ranging from 22 to 48 square metres—feature AmaWaterways’ signature twin-balcony design, delivering both style and comfort.

Onboard, guests will enjoy a relaxed, boutique experience with amenities including a sun deck pool, a spacious fitness room, and a culinary offering that celebrates Latin American flavours alongside global favourites. A highlight is the intimate al fresco specialty restaurant, bringing guests closer to the sights and sounds of the river.

Two immersive seven-night itineraries—Magic of Colombia and Wonders of Colombia—connect Cartagena and Barranquilla, showcasing the country’s rich cultural tapestry. Guests can expect exclusive experiences including a private Barranquilla Carnival celebration, heritage tours of UNESCO-listed Mompox, rare birdwatching excursions, and a deep dive into the musical and historical legacy of Palenque, the first free African town in the Americas. Pre- and post-cruise land programmes in Cartagena, Medellín and Panama City further enhance the journey.

“This is about more than reaching a new destination—it’s about forging meaningful cultural exchanges and celebrating Colombia’s incredible legacy,” said Kristin Karst, co-founder and Chief Brand Ambassador. “Seeing local communities welcome AmaMagdalena with open arms and joyous celebrations has been truly moving—it’s a shared moment of pride.”

Steve Richards, Managing Director for Australia and New Zealand added, “This launch is the result of over five years of development and collaboration. We’re seeing exceptional interest from seasoned travellers in our region—those who have ‘been there, done that’—who are now seeking something new and authentic. The Magdalena River offers just that.”

AmaWaterways’ Colombian initiative has been delivered in partnership with ProColombia and local stakeholders, with a shared commitment to sustainable and responsible tourism. Training and economic empowerment for riverside communities are central to the project, alongside efforts to protect the ecological and cultural heritage of the region. Later in 2025, AmaWaterways will debut a second vessel, AmaMelodia, further cementing its pioneering presence on the Magdalena River and its long-term investment in the future of Colombian river cruising.
