AmaSintra launches on Portugal's Duoro river

AmaWaterways launches new luxury river ship AmaSintra on Portugal’s Douro river

AmaWaterways has officially christened its latest luxury river cruise ship, AmaSintra, which has now commenced its maiden voyage along Portugal’s picturesque Douro River.

This new addition strengthens AmaWaterways’ footprint in Europe, offering an enhanced, intimate river cruising experience through one of the world’s most celebrated regions.

“We are delighted to introduce another stunning vessel to the Douro River, providing even more opportunities for our guests to explore this captivating destination,” said Kristin Karst, co-founder and Chief Brand Ambassador of AmaWaterways. “Portugal’s popularity as a river cruising hotspot continues to rise, and AmaSintra promises an unforgettable experience for all who step aboard. With departures available through to late December, travellers eager to explore the Douro will find a welcoming home on AmaSintra.”

Accommodating just 102 guests, AmaSintra has been purposefully designed to showcase the beauty of the Douro Valley. The ship features 51 elegantly appointed staterooms, most with a private balcony and floor-to-ceiling windows, offering stunning panoramic views. On board, guests can enjoy an array of spacious public areas, including a Sun Deck with a pool, a fitness suite, and a main restaurant featuring regionally inspired menus alongside international favourites. The official christening ceremony took place in Porto on 17 April 2025, where Jenn Lee, President of Vacation Planners, was named the ship’s godmother.

AmaSintra will operate the immersive Enticing Douro itinerary — a seven-night voyage highlighting the scenic and cultural riches of Portugal and Spain. Guests will have the opportunity to visit renowned vineyards, sample regional wines, and explore the historic cities of Porto, Régua, and Salamanca, with the option to extend their experience through a three-night pre-cruise land programme in Lisbon.

Commenting on the ship’s debut, Steve Richards, Managing Director Australia/New Zealand for AmaWaterways, said, “The addition of AmaSintra to our Douro fleet is exciting news for Aussie and Kiwi travellers. Portugal is a fast-growing destination of interest, and with the Douro Valley recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is a truly exceptional region to explore by river cruise.”
