Rudi Schreiner to step down as CEO of AmaWaterways after 23 years

AmaWaterways has announced a major leadership transition, with co-founder and long-serving CEO Rudi Schreiner stepping down from his executive role on 1 July 2025. Schreiner, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern river cruising, will assume the position of Chairman of the Board.

Current President Kathleen Powell, who joined the company earlier this year, will succeed Schreiner as Chief Executive Officer. Co-founder Kristin Karst will remain with the business in her new role as Brand Ambassador, continuing to report to the board.

Schreiner, 73, has been at the forefront of the river cruise industry for more than three decades. Reflecting on the decision, he said, “It’s time for new energy. I’ve had a fantastic journey in the river cruise business for 33 years, and I look forward to supporting the company in a different capacity.”

Before co-founding AmaWaterways in 2002 with Karst and the late Jimmy Murphy, Schreiner held senior roles in several tour operations where he helped establish river cruising as a mainstream product. His tenure included a brief period with Viking River Cruises, before launching what became one of the industry’s most respected river cruise brands.

Under his leadership, AmaWaterways has grown into a leading premium river cruise line, recognised for its innovative ship design and strong trade partnerships. While Schreiner will step back from day-to-day operations, he will remain involved in a strategic advisory role. “I’ll continue to support the board and offer guidance where needed, but I’m looking forward to slowing down a bit and spending more time with my grandchildren,” he added.

Powell’s appointment signals a new chapter for AmaWaterways as it looks to build on Schreiner’s legacy while navigating future growth.
